Internet news – Disgruntled fans of New Zealand cricket have hijacked an online poll to find the festive period’s worst present, in the process providing newly appointed national captain, Brendon McCullum, with what is likely to be his only victory during the current New Zealand tour of South Africa.

The poll, conducted by upmarket American department store Bloomingdales, was being topped by the new Mumford & Sons album, Babel, until New Zealand were dismissed for 45 during today’s opening session of the Cape Town test, a batting display that prompted angry Black Caps fans to vote en masse.

When the poll finally closed at 14:00 EST today, ‘Captaincy of the New Zealand Cricket Team’ was the clear winner, receiving nearly twice the votes of ‘Festive Socks’ in second place.

McCullum, who received the New Zealand captaincy as an early Christmas present from national team coach, Mike Hesson, was unavailable for comment. It’s currently unknown whether he intends to return the captaincy in exchange for store credit at blackcapshop.com, the New Zealand Cricket website’s online store.
